Heroic past of killer

DAVID Gilroy was once hailed a hero for helping to catch car thieves by the same force who would see him convicted of murder.

Gilroy and friend Sam Paul received a Meritorious Award from Lothian and Borders Police for aiding the capture of the two thieves by blocking a street as they tried to flee in a stolen vehicle along London Road, as reported by the Evening News at the time.

Gilroy was honoured by the force in August 2003.
