He who pays for the pipes calls the tune

A UNIQUE set of bagpipes are set to go under the hammer later this month.

The stunning pipes – which are expected to sell for £7000 - combine ebony and ivory pipes which are half-mounted with 9ct gold.

The caps, slides and mouthpiece are also made with gold and are branded with intricate Pictish designs.

Owned by former Lord Provost of Edinburgh Hugh MacPherson, the rare lot also includes two red covers, a gold anodised aluminium flight case and two books written by the owner.

Also up for auction during this month’s Bonhams annual Scottish sale are a collection of medals won by Queen Victoria’s piper William McDougall.

Other lots include a Victorian Edinburgh policeman’s truncheon.
