Gaelic primary school’s name revealed
A NEW Gaelic primary school which will take the place of the former Bonnington Primary School in Leith has been named Bun-sgoil Taobh na Páirce – or Parkside Primary School.
Extensive refurbishment work is under way at the disused school, with £3.53 million being spent in order to prepare it for its new role.
The new school is due to open in August 2013 and registrations for next year’s P1 intake will begin in December when a new headteacher will also be appointed.
Paul Godzik, the city’s education leader, said: “Parkside Primary will be a very welcome addition to our list of schools and we are already looking forward to it opening its doors next August. I think Parkside is a good choice and I’d like to thank all the staff, pupils and teachers involved in the naming of the school.”
The school will replace the existing Gaelic Medium Unit based within Tollcross Primary School which was established in the 1982. The unit has steadily seen its roll rise over the years as demand has grown.
The cost of the project is being funded by a grant of £1.8m from the Scottish Government with the remaining £1.73m coming from the city council.
