Festival ticket sales smash through the £1m barrier

The Edinburgh International Festival has already smashed the £1 million barrier in ticket sales.

Tickets went on sale to the general public at the weekend and almost a third of last year’s total has already been shifted, it was reported today.

More than £280,000 was taken and added to previous ticket sales to friends and patrons of the Festival.

This year’s biggest sellers so far have been the Mariinsky Ballet’s version of Cinderella with world-famous conductor Valery Gergiev, Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s opera David Et Jonathas and the retelling of My Fair Lady, Meine faire Dame – ein Sprachlabor, at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston.

The first sold-out event is expected to be renowned guitarist John Williams with John Etheridge at the Queen’s Hall on August 22. Another expected sell-out is Antonio Meneses and Maria Joao Pires at the Queen’s Hall on August 14.

Last year, the Festival made around £2.6m from tickets, meaning the EIF has already sold more than a third of its total from 2011.
