Festival preview: Iain Stirling, Happy to be the Clown?; Udderbelly

IAIN STIRLING has come home. The Edinburgh-born face of CBBC and BAFTA brings his hotly anticipated, debut stand-up show, Happy to be the Clown?, to the Festival and is already selling out at the Udderbelly on Bristo Square.

Stirling first burst onto the comedy scene whilst studying for a Law degree at Edinburgh University, reaching the finals of both the Paramount Funniest Student competition in 2009 and the Chortle Student Comedian of the Year, the same year. Just one week after graduating, he found himself on a train down to London to begin presenting on CBBC and two years later received a BAFTA nomination for Best Children’s Presenter. Now, having previously supported the likes of Russell Kane and Rhod Gilbert he’s here in his own right.

Ever wondered why your life ended up the way it did? Stirling does, in his show he attempts to work out why he is such a clown. Covering topics as diverse as trains, Hinduism and Cliff Richard.

When not making people laugh, the funnyman can be found presenting on CBBC every weekday afternoon.

• Iain Stirling: Happy to be the Clown? , Udderbelly - Daisy, Bristo Square, until August 26, 9.40pm, £8.50-£9.50, www.edinburghnews.com
