Expedition art show opens in Stockbridge
A NEW exhibition featuring the works of an artist who retraced the epic voyages of adventurers Shackleton and Scott has opened at a Stockbridge gallery.
Artist Robert Balfour Ward sailed the Southern Ocean on a converted Russian polar survey ship, crossed the Albatross Latitudes and travelled to the base of Mount Erebus to explore expedition huts from Scott’s Final Expedition (1910-1913) and Shackleton’s Nimrod Expedition (1907-1909).
He was previously presented with the JD Fergusson Arts Award in 2010 for his proposal to visit Antarctica and the expedition huts of the explorers on Ross Island.
His exhibition, showcased at the Patriothall Gallery, reflects upon themes of exploration and human endeavour through sketches, photographs, prints and sculptures.
The multi-disciplinary exhibition opened at the Hamilton Place venue today and will run until July 25.
