Elderly cyclist discovered lying in road with fractured skull and hip

Police are appealing for information after an elderly cyclist was discovered lying unconscious on a Lothians road.

A passing motorist contacted police around 1.55pm on Tuesday, July 31, after finding the 71-year-old man lying unconscious on the B7008 road about one mile past the Harburn Golf Course in West Calder, West Lothian.

The injured man was taken to hospital where he continues to be treated for a fractured skull and broken hip.

Police officers are now keen to speak with anyone who can assist in establishing how the cyclist sustained his injuries.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: “We are very confident that the elderly cyclist has not been involved in a collision with another vehicle, but are still trying to determine how he came to fall from his bike.

“Anyone who was on the road last Tuesday afternoon and remembers seeing the cyclist prior to him being found unconscious, or who has information that can assist with our inquiries is asked to come forward.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131-311 3131 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
