Edinburgh Festival Fringe: ‘Picking what to pack is a problem’ - Shirley & Shirley Unleashed on luggage dilemmas

WELLIES and brollies. If there is one thing we’re used to in the Capital, it’s rain. Which left Fringe comedy act Shirley & Shirley contemplating just what they’d need to pack. Here, they share their Edinburgh wardrobe.

ONE thing we all share is our obsession with the weather. Whatever the conversation, it will undoubtedly turn to the subject of our climate. Oscar Wilde famously condemned it as the “last refuge of the unimaginative”.

We don’t mind being dull, but strongly object to being cold, or worse, cold and wet. Welcome to Edinburgh and welcome to our wardrobe: winter coat, check; boots x 2, check; scarves, a mélange, check; muff? Perhaps a tad impractical what with having to flyer so maybe a pair of fingerless gloves instead. That way we can still get a grip on our saturated flyers and, when it gets too wet to cope, spark up.

“We remain hopeful that there will be the odd flare of sunshine too, so we’ll also pack some lighter gear – shorts that cut off just above the knee as well as a skirt of indecent proportions. But just as we never make it up to Arthur’s Seat on our day off, we doubt the weather will ever stay warm enough to wear a skirt that stops short of one’s Judy.

If you want to find out what a Judy is, then come and see the show. And if you agree with Oscar Wilde, then you’ve clearly never been to Edinburgh.

• Shirley & Shirley Unleashed, Underbelly, Bristo Square, until August 27, 4.10pm, £10-£11, www.edfrige.com
