Digital inclusion work lands Jonny the call to attend BT awards

AN East Lothian man has been recognised for his voluntary work promoting digital inclusion in his local community.

Jonny Russell was named New Volunteer of the Year in a special ceremony at the top of the BT Tower in London.

He was the only Scot recognised in this year’s BT Chairman Awards, which celebrate the achievements of BT employees who have volunteered in their local communities.

Jonny, 39, is the chairman of the Fraser Centre Community Trust in Tranent, which aims to address the social and economic needs of people in the community. He helps co-ordinate training and education activities in the centre, including digital inclusion work with elderly members of the community.

The IT expert, said: “I was delighted to be chosen for the award. It is great to have what you are doing for your community recognised, respected and valued.

“The trip was a treat in itself and picking up an award at the top of BT Tower was very special.

“Our redevelopment of the centre is continuing and one day we will have a state-of-the-art facility where people can come in a safe and welcoming environment, be educated and gain new skills which open up employment opportunities.

“We also offer a place where people can be entertained more affordably. Many people find it hard to afford small luxuries, like theatre, just now and for older people a difficult journey into the city can exclude them from a cultural outing.”
