City’s revellers ensure it’s a very special St Andrew’s Day

REVELLERS across the Capital gathered to celebrate St Andrew’s Day in style.
From a carnival at Edinburgh Castle to a unique festival exploring the story of the Saltire flag, events throughout the city and beyond were packed as people marked Scotland’s national day.
The celebration began a six-week period of festivities and came after the city’s Christmas lights were switched on during an event attended by around 15,000 people on Thursday night.
Edinburgh Castle’s St Andrew’s Day carnival saw children and adults take part in lantern-making classes followed by a light show, contemporary dance and fireworks.
And in East Lothian, the 2012 Saltire Festival featured music and literary gatherings, as well as school events and a farmers’ market showcasing local produce. Andy Neal, chief executive of Essential Edinburgh, welcomed the enthusiasm shown by celebrating residents. He said: “The experience of being in Edinburgh is always special, but at this time of year, the atmosphere in the city is unique.”
