Capital businesses go large with office space demands

CAPITAL firms are seeking larger offices despite an overall fall in demand for city-centre premises, industry experts have claimed.

A new report compiled by officebroker.com found that businesses were leasing twice as much space in the first half of this year as they did during the same six-month period in 2011.

The average office size is now more than six workstations compared with three the previous year in what has been attributed to a combination of larger firms setting up in the Capital and a growing number of smaller firms expanding.

However, demand for space, which has been highly prized for a number of years, fell by a quarter when compared with the first half of 2011.

Chris Meredith, head of UK sales at officebroker.com, said: “The limited supply of office space available in Edinburgh in the last few years created a premium market, with those firms wishing to secure city centre space facing restricted choices and higher licence fees.

“It’s understandable that with a range of great deals currently being offered by providers businesses are keen to take advantage.”
