Alleged rape victim’s mum denies racism

A GRANDMOTHER has admitted that one of the first questions she asked her daughter was whether her alleged attacker was black.

The 54-year-old said she had already argued about “foreigners” before her daughter claimed she’d been sexually assaulted by someone she met on an internet dating site.

Her daughter earlier told the High Court at Livingston she was contacted by David Evans, 34, after she viewed his profile on Plenty of Fish.

Evans – of Stenhouse Avenue, but originally from Ghana – denies sexually assaulting and raping the mum at a house in Craigmillar on May 1 last year. The married dad-of-one claims she consented to sex.

The woman’s mum – who cannot be named for legal reasons – yesterday admitted she had told her daughter: “I thought you weren’t going to go near another foreigner after [her grand-daughter’s] dad.”

The jury was told that her daughter’s North African husband, who was white, had left her after she found out she was pregnant.

But under cross-examination, by defence advocate Lilli Prais, the grandmother denied holding racist views.

The trial, before Lord Doherty, continues.
