Spire awarded for approach to cancer care

AN oncology unit at Spire Murrayfield Hospital has been honoured with an award for the building’s capacity to
promote comfort and social interaction in cancer care.

The day unit received the new Macmillan Quality Environment Mark, a new accolade which recognises and rewards environments that score highly in creating a “welcoming and supportive” atmosphere for patients and their families.

Murrayfield Hospital is among the first sites to be given the award, developed in collaboration with people living with cancer and organisations including the Department of Health.

Deb Scott, consultant oncology nurse at Murrayfield, said: “We’re delighted to have been given this prestigious award.

“It reflects the hard work and dedication of the team that designed the centre and all the staff who work to make the centre a welcoming and supportive environment for patients and their families.” Tom McInnes of Macmillan Cancer Support said: “To receive the award environments have to score highly in areas such as use of space, comfort and atmosphere, personal and social interaction and health and well being.

“Consideration is given to such things as the greeting people receive, the use of natural light and outdoor space, and the availability of quiet, private rooms.”
