Gullane make strong start

HOSTS Gullane recorded the biggest win of the night in the opening round of golf’s County Cup, the top team tournament in East Lothian.

They won 13 and 11 over the double foursome against Gifford as the start of the event featured a number of one-sided affairs. Dunbar Castle beat Aberlady 12 and 10; Rhodes triumphed 10 and 8 over Amisfield; Luffness New were 9 and 8 winners over Thorntree; and Kilspindie beat Gullane IX 8 and 6.

In the two closest encounters, Longniddry progressed at the expense of Dunbar, with a 7 and 5 victory, while the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers beat The Glen 5 and 4.
