Golf: West Linton into last eight after seeing off Swanston
WEST LINTON continued to get their teeth into this season’s Pollock (Scotrans) Ltd Edinburgh Summer League after shaking off the midges to win at home against Swanston.
It secured a home tie in the quarter-final for Simon Mackenzie’s men, who complete their round-robin campaign with a trip to Swanston.
Title holders Royal Burgess are also on course to be at home in the last eight after overcoming a trip to Torphin Hill with an under-strength team.
“We had eight of our squad of 14 unavailable,” said Burgess team manager Richard Hughes. “However, a spirited performance saw us win 5½-2½.”
Hughes himself was called into action for his first league match in 15 years and managed to secure a half.
Performance of the night, however, came from Varun Varadharajan, who was six-under for 11 holes in beating David Morrans 9 and 7.
Liberton’s hopes of making the quarter-finals were dented as they had to settle for a 4-4 draw at Lothianburn.
And, in a game between two teams without a win this season, Prestonfield made home advantage count to beat Craigmillar Park.
