Golf: Matthew in mix but Booth regrets French connection

North berwick’s Catriona Matthew shot a second-round 72 and made the cut on the final mark of two over par 144 at the Evian Masters in France.

Comrie’s Carly Booth was the second Scot in the field and the winner of this year’s Aberdeen Asset management Ladies’ Open at Archerfield in May and then the Swiss Open last month finished one better than Matthew despite struggling with a knee injury.

The 20-year-old had joined in the annual charity football match with French legends Zinedine Zidane and Laurent Blanc on Thursday evening – and woke up in severe pain.

She shot 71 for a one-over-par 145 and was 13 shots behind the leader, Stacy Lewis.

Booth was close to tears when she finished her round. “I couldn’t put any weight on my left leg,” she explained. “I don’t really know if it was the football because I kick everything with my right leg and it’s my left knee.

Lewis, the leader by two after a course record 63, added a 69 for a 12 under par total and she led by one at halfway from South Korea’s Il Hee Lee (67).
