The Rumour Mill: Monday’s football news and gossip
Jordan Rhodes is likely to spark a bidding war
In today’s Rumour Mill: Celtic face strong competition in race to sign Jordan Rhodes; Rangers to offer CVA to creditors; James McPake in contract talks with Coventry; plus the rest of the day’s football news and gossip.
Celtic target wanted by Fulham
Fulham are set to join the hunt for Scotland star Jordan Rhodes, who is also on Celtic’s radar. The English Premier League club could price Neil Lennon out of the market with a £5million offer for the Huddersfield striker who scored 40 goals last season. (Record)
• Lennon’s other striker targets, Burnley’s Jay Rodriguez and Icelandic youngster Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson, are also attracting interest from the Premiership, which could force him to turn his attention to Charlton’s Yann Kermorgant. (Record)
• Norwegian midfielder Markus Henrikson says he is waiting for Celtic to make a move, while Leeds player Robert Snodgrass, who Lennon has also been monitoring, is attracting interest from Norwich boss Paul Lambert. (Record)
• Celtic central defender Darren O’Dea wants the club to release him on a free transfer. The Republic of Ireland international is out of contract on Thursday. (Scotsman)
Rangers takeover: CVA day
Prospective Rangers owner Charles Green has until the close of play today to table the offer to creditors which he hopes will drag the troubled club out of administration. Green hopes a CVA will be agreed, which would take around 28 days after the initial offer is made to be completed. If this is not accepted today, it is understood that liquidation would be the only option with the club operating at a loss of £1.5m per month. (Various)
Miller ‘embarrassed’ by Scots’ performance
Kenny Miller last night admitted that Scotland’s 5-1 defeat to the USA in Jacksonville was an embarrassment. The Scotland captain said: “Of course it hurts - it’s an embarrassment to be honest.” (Various)
McPake in talks with Coventry
Defender James McPake, who spent much of last season on loan at Hibs, is to thrash out his long-term future in talks with parent club Coventry City. The Easter Road club are keen to lure him back to Edinburgh on a permanent basis in a reported £100,000 deal, but Coventry’s development director Steve Waggott said: “James is our player and he returns to us on 1 July. Scottish football can’t offer the most attractive of packages.” (Scotsman)
IN BRIEF
• Dunfermline striker Pat Clarke has joined Raith Rovers on a permanent deal after his loan spell at the Kirkcaldy club last season.
• Queen’s Park striker Michael Daly has joined Third Division rivals Annan Athletic.
