Bonnyrigg battle back but have to settle for a draw
Last night’s group C clash in the Dechmont Forklift South League Cup saw Bonnyrigg Rose held to a 1-1 draw by visitors Livingston United.
Livingston’s Mark Paglueri opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a powerful shot. One down at the break, Bonnyrigg looked in trouble but with goalkeeper Andy Carlin in superb form between the sticks they pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
The Rose drew level on 68 minutes thanks to a terrific strike from Paul Shields. He took control of the ball in midfield, drove forward, and fired in a great strike from 25 yards into the top corner. Buoyed by this, Bonnyrigg pushed hard for a winner but had to settle for the draw.
Bad weather put paid to last night’s other ties with Whitburn v Linlithgow and West Calder v Fauldhouse in group B both postponed. Tonight, though, sees the battle for semi-final spots hot up as Arniston Rangers look to dispose of Musselburgh and Newtongrange take on Haddington in group D.
“We’re rebuilding a side just now, but we’re unbeaten so far and if we keep knocking the ball about then who knows what can happen,” said Arniston boss Steve Osbourne. “We’ve brought in a raft of new players and all we’re trying to do in these games is give them game time for the league campaign. It’ll take us a long time to get this club back to where it should be but a good run in the League cup would build confidence.”
Newtongrange, meanwhile, are enjoying a rich vein of form. They are unbeaten in the section and on the back of two good wins are in a strong position to progress. Manager Allan Miller is struggling with injuries though. “The biggest difficulty tonight will be fielding a side,” he said.
Haddington are struggling with a long injury list and manager Steve McLeish will have to use his full squad of players for the Newtongrange game. They will start as the underdogs but last season Haddington scored a barrowload of goals in their league campaign but didn’t threaten champions Dalkeith because of inconsistency.
Elsewhere Blackburn are at home to near-neighbours Stoneyburn in group B while Penicuik travel to Pumpherston in group B. Edinburgh United face a Spartans side suffering the after-effects of an 11-goal thrashing from Broxburn on Monday night in group C.
