HEARTS directors are still mulling over candidates to fill the vacant manager’s job before making moves to find a successor to Paulo Sergio.

A shortlist has been sent from Edinburgh to the club’s Lithuania-based hierarchy containing several names which majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov and director Sergejus Fedotovas are currently poring over.

Through their own contacts across Europe, Romanov and Fedotovas also have a list of people they are considering. One name recommended to them by staff in Scotland is that of John McGlynn, the Raith Rovers manager. However, he has yet to receive any approach about the position.

“I’ve not had a single phonecall relating to the job so if I’m favourite either Mr Romanov is being very cute about it or someone is about to lose all their money,” said McGlynn. “It’s purely speculation. I’m manager of Raith, and I’m concentrating on the job I have. But I remain ambitious and I want to test myself at the highest level possible.”

Sergio is planning his own future after rejecting a contract offer to remain Hearts manager. “I have had some contact with other clubs and there are some things moving for me,” he said. “There are no vacancies in Portugal for new coaches, so it will be outside of my country.

“Money is not everything for me. Last season I refused an offer from a club in the Middle East that was financially superior to the British market.

“My next club doesn’t have to be a big one. I need to see they are ambitious and if they have good working conditions, I would be interested.”

Meanwhile, former Hearts striker Gary Glen is eager to reluanch his career after joining Ross County. “At Hearts I wasn’t given a chance on a regular basis,” he said. “There comes a time when you need a new challenge. County is a fresh start for me.”
