HEARTS manager John
McGlynn still harbours hopes of signing a striker before the summer transfer window closes, although he revealed today that he is still awaiting permission from the Tynecastle board to do so.

Recruiting a forward has been McGlynn’s priority since he was appointed by Hearts in June. John Sutton scored his second goal of the new season in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Inverness but experienced back-up for the Englishman remains thin on the ground.

McGlynn is relatively confident that he can broker a deal to reinforce his attack but the club hierarchy have yet to authorise a move for a player.

He has given recommendations to majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov and director Sergejus Fedotovas and is waiting on an answer.

“I’m hoping we are going to get a striker in. I’m reasonably confident,” McGlynn told the Evening News.

“Everyone knows we need one but we need the go-ahead to do that. That’s not new. Most managers need things passed by a board of directors or a chief executive. It’s no different here. We need to put recommendations and it’s up to them to say ‘do this’ or ‘do that’.”

Hearts signed former St Johnstone goalkeeper, Peter Enckelman, on Friday following injury to No. 2 Mark Ridgers. “The goalkeeping situation is one we weren’t expecting because the injury came out of the blue,” said McGlynn. “If it happened on September 1, we might have been in bigger trouble and wouldn’t have had the option to bring someone in. Money is going towards a goalkeeper but that was a necessity.”

Europa League opponents, Liverpool, opened their Premier League campaign by losing 3-0 to West Brom on Saturday.
