Film lovers see the bigger picture as IMAX hits Capital

EDINBURGH is to get its first IMAX cinema under a deal struck by two major international firms.

The huge “immersive” three-dimensional screen will be installed at the Cineworld complex at Fountainbridge.

Bosses want the facility open by next month, and will celebrate its unveiling by screening advance previews of a Hollywood blockbuster.

It is hoped the addition will boost the viewing experience for cinema-goers in Edinburgh, and improve attendances for movies and other events the IMAX may screen.

IMAX screens are known for the clarity of their picture, as well as the sheer size of the screen, which is considerably larger than traditional screens.

Lindsay Cook, Cineworld’s general manager in Edinburgh, said to celebrate its opening it would be screening Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, from December 21, five days ahead of its general release in the UK.

He added: “We couldn’t be more excited to be bringing this uniquely immersive cinema experience to our customers.

“And what better way to premiere Cineworld’s first IMAX screen than an advance showing of a huge blockbuster like this?”

Its installation will boost entertainment options in the Capital.

Critics have often said there are more options in Glasgow, which had IMAX more than a decade ago as part of a Clydeside regeneration, but this will improve leisure options in the Capital.

The two companies will open cinemas in Nottingham and Sheffield once the Edinburgh project is complete, taking the total number of IMAX screens in the UK to 19.

Umm - Fountainbridge used to have Omnimax, which is much the same, and for the first six months showed the IMAX Everest film which was fantastic. However I think they did not market it well, and after a long while appeared to have given up. I have seen brilliant IMAX films in many other cities and countries, mainly travelogues, also the Shuttle and Space Station films. Definitely a worthwhile experience. I hope it works out this time.

I take it it will be going in Screen 1 which used to be an iWerks screen whatever that is, and is a very oddly shaped auditorium. Never really liked Screen 1 - looking forward to the revamp.
