Film and animation showcase at cinema recalls Seventies songwriter

A FORMER David Bowie collaborator, a Hollywood star and the Arab Spring all feature in a two-day showcase of Edinburgh College of Art film and animation students’ work at the Filmhouse cinema.

Every year, graduating students get the chance to display their films on the big screen in front of the public.

This year’s programme features a diverse range of films, from award- winning music videos to hard-hitting documentaries.

Showing tonight is an animation by BAFTA winner Ainslie Henderson which features the voice of Pirates of the Caribbean star Mackenzie Crook and an animated music video by Anna Ginsburg, commissioned by Island Records for the Bombay Bicycle Club’s single How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep.

Tomorrow’s films include Sara Issac’s BAFTA-nominated documentary, Karama Has No Walls, exploring Yemen’s recent revolution and the violations of human rights that followed. Magda Dragan’s film, Soliloquy, is about the life choices of young composer Michael Garrett. In the 1960s and 1970s he collaborated with David Bowie and Ken Russell, but he now lives on an Edinburgh council estate.

Both showcases begin at 8.30pm at the Filmhouse. Tickets are £7.50.
