A BRITISH show-jumping gold at London 2012 has certainly had a style effect on this winter’s fashion trends.

Whether you’re in the saddle or not, skin-tight jodhpurs, slick riding boots, tweed jackets and horse-inspired accessories are everywhere this season.

Equestrian chic is set to continue to be one of 2013’s hottest trends and there’s no better way to work the look than at Musselburgh Racecourse’s hotly anticipated New Year’s Day race day.

“Our race days have for long been the ultimate stage for showcasing some of the best racehorses in Scotland, however we are increasingly finding they are also becoming unofficial fashion platforms for our race-goers,” admits Sarah Montgomery of Musselburgh Racecourse.

So, be the first one out of the gate this season – and at the races – with the hottest equestrian looks.

With a twist on the classic for 2013, step away from tan leather in favour of patent black boots with a heel. Hermes travelled back to its equestrian roots for winter 2012 with black leather and soft dark cashmere, while Alexander Wang and Salvatore Ferragamo added classic riding boots to everything. Frida Giannini at Gucci, as always, incorporated horse bits and
equestrian accents in the nouveau gothic fall collection.

To recreate this look head to LK Bennett, Russell & Bromley, Dune or Duo for knee-high heeled riding boots complete with spur-like buckles. Zara and Whistles has a great selection of jodhpur-like leggings, or be brave with a pair of leather trousers from H&M, Miss Selfridge or Topshop. For a traditional take on equestrian you will be spoilt for choice with a huge selection of tweed blazers, leather riding gloves and flat black riding boots swamping the high street as an enduring trend still going strong from last year. Marks & Spencer, House of Fraser, Hobbs and Mulberry are your number one destinations for tweed, comfy knits and horsey brown saddle bags, ideal for a weekend ride out in the country.

Whatever equestrian style you decide to rock this season, add a swishy ponytail a riding hat and flushed cheeks and you’ll be hot to trot.

• Tickets to the New Year’s Day race day start at £19; children aged 17 and under go free when accompanied by an adult. To book, visit www.musselburgh-racecourse.co.uk. A chartered bus service is available for pick up at Waterloo Place for £5 return – this must be booked in advance.
