Read-in protest over fees

STUDENTS at Edinburgh University have held a read-in protest in Bristo Square to urge the university to give a better deal to international students.

The students handed a petition to Mary Bownes, vice
principal of external engagement, yesterday which asked the university to set fixed tuition fees for international students.

International student fees are currently set by individual institutions and vary widely, often increasing year on year by up to five per cent, or hundreds of pounds.

James McAsh, EUSA president, said: “International students are getting an extremely unfair deal in the UK at the moment.

“The UK Government is making it much harder for them to study here, and their option to stay past graduation is fast becoming a distant memory. This is despite the vast cultural contribution.”
