Children pulled to safety as dogs go on rampage
Shopkeeper Vikki Ashraf, right, was working when the dogs burst in
TWO Doberman dogs have been impounded by police after causing havoc in a village street.
Children had to be pulled to safety after the dogs went wild in a convenience store in Newtongrange, Midlothian.
After tearing around the shop, the dogs ran out and caused panic in the street as they pounced on another dog outside a nearby chip shop.
Police today said they were trying to trace the owners.
The two dogs darted into the convenience store around 8.15pm last night as a man and his daughter were at the till with their small mongrel dog.
The man had to pull his daughter away from the dogs when they acted aggressively.
Shopkeeper Vikki Ashraf said: “The dog was about to take her hand off. It’s just as well the guy pulled his daughter out of the way.”
The 32-year-old was working in the stock room of Newton Stores in Main Street when the two dogs burst through the door and ran around the aisles. He said: “I saw these two massive Dobermans push open the door and run around the aisles going mad. There was a much smaller dog at the till with his owner and his daughter and they just went for it.
“The wee girl, who was about six or seven, put her hand out to stop them going at her dog and her dad had to pull her back. It’s just as well he did.”
Mr Ashraf said the dogs ran out of the shop after the door was pulled open, but pounced on another dog outside the nearby Nitten Chippy.
A 19-year-old worker at the takeaway, who asked not to be named, said the attack only stopped when a boy aged about 12 – believed to be the owner of the Dobermans – chased the pair away with a stick.
He said the elderly owner of the dog, understood to be a spaniel, was left panicked.
He said: “We saw this little boy walking down the street with the dogs off their leashes before they ran into the shop down the road.
“He wasn’t in control of them at all and they just bolted. We heard they attacked someone’s dog at the shop down the road then they ran up here and went for our customer’s dog, which was outside.
“It only ended when the boy grabbed this stick and chased them up the road. The owner of the spaniel got a real shock.”
A spokeswoman for the ambulance service confirmed that paramedics had checked over an elderly male but said that he did not require medical attention.
A police spokeswoman said officers had traced the dogs and taken them to police kennels. She added that police are attempting to trace the owners and are still making enquiries.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 11:20 PM#33 Maybe yesterday news but tomorrows tragedy in waiting, if action is never taken then we are all guilty of neglect of our responsibilty to protect society from all dangers that can arise. As i have and others have stated in the EEN, there is no piont to closing the stable door after the horses have bolted, action has be taken before the horses are put in the stable,as the saying goes"an ounce of provention is far more effective than ten ton of cure".

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 03:42 PMFAO : Cabbagenribs you really do sound like someone who votes labour and would be a lot of fun to be around. The fact of the matter is there are a great % of shell suit wearing interbred mutants hanging around the streets of Edinburgh some who like to display trophy dogs to intimidate others. I am sure these dogs can ( if in the right responsible hands) fine but when in the ownership of these thugs are dangerous. This is part of a bigger problem, we live in a country that encourages living off benefits, drinking cheap booze, smoking poor quality cigarettes and watching trash on TV as well as being lazy having no work ethic and and behaving like chavs

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 03:28 PMIt may be a big extreme but every dog outside it's own home should be muzzled, if a dog is caught without a muzzle the owner is fined in the first instance, second time the dog is taken from them and they are banned from owning dogs for life, with a 10,000 pound fine and jail if they do not obey the ruling. We are far too soft in this country on many things and dog control is one of them.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 01:18 PMAnnaMaria, very true. Golden retrievers and labradors tend to be big soft lumps that stand a chance of drowning you by slobbering all over you. Sadly it seems to be the case in modern society that certain breeds of dog are associated with a certain class of society. Dobermann, rotweiler and most types of pit-bull are certainly unpredictable and must be trained properly. However, in doing so you are removing their natural characteristics and behaviour. Dogs can be very loving pets which bring a real sense of companionship to a person but I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to buy one of the 'dangerous dogs' breeds.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 01:02 PMA comment to the 'it's-the-owner-not-the-dog' brigade - please correct me if I'm wrong: To my knowledge there have been no reports about golden retrievers or labrardors (both larger dogs) attacking children without provocation.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 09:15 AMNittens population covers all the supposed classes, unfair to point the finger at certain "types" and to say "booze" was involved because the dogs ran into licensed premises "looking for their chav owner", that's just inane nonsense. Bottom line Is big daft dugs are dangerous regardless of whether their owner thinks so, the "he wouldny hurt a fly" sentiment doesn't fill folk with confidence when the reality is they're animals.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 08:31 AM#8 - I was referring to the name you use in your postings with the word 'intelligent' - not your 'supposed' intelligence itself! As for dogs being banned because of the mess they create, their unpredictability and the harm they cause - I think that just about sums up a vast majority of the youth of today - look at the rampages down south at the end of last year as a prime example. It is these filthy, fouling, dangerous individuals that should be banned from our streets! As for disease - there are as many diseases that humans pass around - some of which are particularly fatal. Personally, I would rather have a dog as a compananion any day - as I'm sure many others would agree - they are much more loyal and loving than many a human I have met in my life time.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 08:01 AM#20 By the way there is one thing i forgot to mention is this about packs of dogs runnig wild, in Oldam Great Manchester, these "Packs" who are alleged to have attacked young females in the local community,i hope that does not happen up in this part of the country,as the local population would become very upset, again animals running wild out of control, again Booze was a factor. So i think that the sale of Booze should be looked at very closely indeed along wirh a few other things that the local community would get very upset about.
