Holligan gets GB into final in Barcelona

Commonwealth Youth Games 200 metres champion Tom Holligan (Edinburgh AC) was given his chance in the Great Britain sprint relay team at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona last night and helped them reach tonight’s final with the second fastest time of the three qualifying heats.

A Japanese quartet were
the slickest, winning the first heat in 39.01 secs, while in the third heat GB, with Holligan on the third leg and the new
World Junior 100 metres champion Adam Gemili on the anchor leg, came storming home in 39.09 ahead of Jamaica (39.19).

USA won the second heat in 39.25 and GB will have high hopes of a medal, even gold with David Bollarinwa, who was sixth in last night’s 200m final in a personal best of 20.69 secs, likely to come in for the Firrhill High FP.

Even if he is left out however Holligan, having run in the heat, will receive a medal if his team-mates do the business.

Britain captured two medals last night in the women’s long jump won by the talented
Katarina Johnson-Thompson with a personal best of 6.81m with Jazmin Sawyers third with 6.67m and women’s 800m silver medallist Jessica Judd remarkably came back to qualify for tomorrow’s 1500 final with a time of 4:14.64 in second place in her heat.
