Clegg easing off as she makes times

LIBBY CLEGG admits she is now entering the calm before the storm after underlining her London 2012 credentials with double silver at the BT Paralympic World Cup.

The 22-year-old sprinter has barely stopped over the past month, opening her outdoor season at the Olympic Stadium and warm-weather training in Spain before her trip to Manchester.

Clegg finished second twice at the London Disability Athletics Challenge, the competition acting as the London 2012 test event, and was to repeat the trick at the World Cup.

She clocked 12.57 seconds and 26.26 in the multi-classification 100m and 200m respectively, on both occasions finishing behind Brazilian Paralympic champion Terezinha Guilhermina. Clegg won’t face Guilhermina at London 2012 as their categories differ, however, satisfied with her outing, she insists her schedule will be hectic no more.

“It was a really good competition in Manchester, the atmosphere was fantastic and I had two really good performances so I am delighted,” said Clegg.

“I am pretty happy. I did the test event at the start of the month, that was my first race of the season. All my preparation towards the Paralympics is going well and training is starting to lighten up a little bit now.

“Official selection is on July 9 but I have got the standards and I am running in the top five in the world right now so, hopefully, I will be okay.”

n The BT Paralympic World Cup took place in Manchester from May 22-26 with elite international athletes competing in athletics, football seven-a-side and wheelchair basketball. Go to www.btparalympicworldcup.com for more information.
