Welsh bull smashes Limousin world record at 120,00gns

A LIMOUSIN bull, Dolcorsllwyn Fabio, bred by Powys-based Glyn Vaughan, smashed the breed record price for a bull, and also the UK and European bovine record and the world Limousin record, when selling for 120,000gns (£126,000) to Alan Jenkinson, Whinfellpark, Penrith at the Limousin bull sale at Carlisle at the weekend.

The new record smashed the previous best of 100,000gns from 2006

The record price capped a remarkable day’s trading that saw 131 bulls sell to an average of £8,203.09, itself a UK all-breeds record average, up close on £2,000 on the previous mark. The three-hour sale saw more than £1 million worth of top quality bull changing hands, 25 bulls in all selling at 10,000gns or more, mainly to commercial purchasers.

Second-best price of the sale was 38,000gns for a bull bred in James McKay’s Ampertaine herd, Co Derry. He headed back to Northern Ireland with new owner Joe Rafferty, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh

The best Scottish-bred bull of the sale, Emslies Frenchman, from Mintlaw-based Harry Emslie and Lynwen Evans, sold to John Downs and Jerry Turner, of the Southern Cattle Company, Florida for 37,000gns.

A pair of bulls, both Scottish bred, then traded at 30,000gns. The first to make this money was the best priced black Limousin bull of the day, and a new record mark for a black Limousin, Goldies Black Forever from Dumfriesshire breeder Bruce Goldie.

The other to make this money was Anside Flint from Aberdeenshire breeder Stephen Irvine and family and he was snapped up by David and Margaret Kelly for their Cumbrian-based Netherhall herd.
