May offers to meet dead teen’s mother

HOME Secretary Theresa May has offered to meet the mother of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence amid calls for a public inquiry into allegations of police corruption surrounding the case.

Junior Home Office minister James Brokenshire said no decision had been taken about whether to hold a new inquiry into the alleged conduct of police during the investigation into the 1993 killing.

Summoned to the Commons to update MPs on the latest developments, Mr Brokenshire said Mrs May was “treating these issues with the utmost seriousness”.

It was claimed this week a confidential report compiled by the Met’s anti-corruption command was not disclosed to the panel of the 1998 public inquiry that examined the force’s handling of the case.
