'Turbulence' hits homewares
THE owner of the Dunelm Mill chain of home furnishings and fabrics stores said the homewares sector has seen a few months of "huge turbulence".
The company, which operates a store at Straiton in Midlothian, recorded a 2.3 per cent rise in sales in the 26 weeks to December 29, although like-for-like sales declined by 5.6 per cent.
It also said that it had outperformed the general home textiles market and increased market share.
Will Adderley, Dunelm's chief executive, said: "The last few months have been a period of huge turbulence in many retail markets and homewares has been no exception.
"We have seen a number of competitors exit the market as a result. In this context I believe that Dunelm's performance has been very solid."
