'Son of Concorde' deal struck

JAPAN and France are to collaborate on the development of a new aircraft, which is being dubbed the "son of Concorde".

Companies from both countries will split an annual investment of 1.01 million for research over the next three years, said Japan’s trade ministry, after the deal was struck at the Paris airshow.

It is expected that the plane will have around 300 seats and cut the flight time between New York and Tokyo to six hours.

"This is truly significant industrial co-operation," Japan’s trade minister, Shoichi Nakagawa, said.

The original Concorde, built by the UK and France, was taken out of service after 34 years in 2003. One of the aircraft is now on show at East Fortune, East Lothian.
