Thomas Cook books see 'robust' trade

TRAVEL agent Thomas Cook said it is continuing to see "robust" trade despite the wider slowdown in consumer spending.

The company, which has ten branches in the Lothians, said it has ten per cent fewer holidays on its books than it did at the same time last year.

It has so far sold 43 per cent of summer 2009 holidays that are available to UK customers.

However, it said it is starting to see a later booking trend throughout the UK.

Its seasonal loss in the three months to the end of 2008 – always a quiet time for travel agents – more than halved on the same period of 2007, to 27.4 million.

Manny Fontenla-Novoa, the firm's chief executive, said: "We remain well placed to manage our business through challenging trading conditions."
