Tesco appoints Broadbent as chairman

TESCO brought months of speculation to an end yesterday by naming City veteran Sir Richard Broadbent as its next chairman.

Broadbent, a former executive chairman of HM Customs & Excise, will stand down as deputy chairman of Barclays when he takes up the Tesco role in November, succeeding David Reid, who is retiring.

His appointment follows a search led by senior independent director Patrick Cescau.Broadbent, also an executive director of Schroders, stepped down as chairman of Arriva last year when the transport group was sold to Deutschebahn. He had been linked with the chairman's post at insurance giant Aviva when Lord Sharman steps down next year, but the Tesco announcement is thought to rule out such a move.

Ahead of him assuming the reins as chairman, Broadbent will join the board as a non- executive director on 2 July.

His appointment will mark another change at the top for Tesco after its long-standing chief executive, Sir Terry Leahy, retired earlier this year.
