Microsoft is UK's top brand
SOFTWARE giant Microsoft today beat the BBC, British Airways and Mercedes-Benz to be crowned the UK's leading consumer brand.
The nation's top 500 "superbrands" list reflects ongoing changes in customers' taste. Recent newcomers Google, Dyson and Nokia all feature in the top 20 favourites.
They rub shoulders with more established brands such as Tesco, Durex and Marks & Spencer.
A group of industry experts picked 650 brands from a list of 1200 on the basis of their quality, reliability and distinctiveness within the sector.
Market researchers YouGov then asked more than 2000 members of the public to vote for their preferred brands.
This was used to create a list of the top 500 "superbrands" - defined as those which have the best reputation in their fields and which offer consumers "emotional and tangible" advantages.
The top 500 list was commissioned by branding consultancy the Superbrands Organisation.
