Glasgow games firm seals Italian deal

A GAMES developer based in Glasgow has been chosen by Italian film and TV production company Rainbow to make a mobile phone “virtual world” game based on a TV series aimed at young girls.

Tsumanga Studios will develop a mobile phone “app” for Winx Club – which features fairies and is popular with seven- to ten-year-old girls – in the spring, ahead of an online multi-player virtual world game in the autumn.

Winx Club – claimed to be the “number one intellectual property for girls” across Europe – is a TV show now in its fifth series. Rainbow also licences a range of branded products including DVDs, toys, clothing and books.

Iginio Straffi, Rainbow’s chairman, said: “The digital games represent a strategic new media for Winx Club.”

The company estimates 60 per cent of girls under the age of 12 own a mobile phone.
