Store shops around for city producers
BOSSES at a new Asda superstore in Leith have invited local producers to put forward their wares to be sold in the store.
The new 41,000 square foot supermarket opens in Leith, close to the Ocean Terminal shopping centre, on Monday, November 10, and before then Asda is looking to stock its shelves with local produce.
Products must come with a barcode, which the supermarket said it could help smaller suppliers with, and it must meet minimum food safety standards.
John McGovern, manager at the new store, said the inclusion of quality local and regional producers will compliment the store's planned product lines.
"We know from talking to our customers, and from positive experience, that there is a big demand for local sourcing – particularly in Scotland," he said. "We're on the lookout for producers from the Edinburgh area who think their products have what it takes to be part of our opening range.
"Stocking products supplied by local people for local people is part of our commitment to supporting our community. If you've got a local product that people just can't get enough of then we'd love to hear from you."
