Scottish exports remain stable

THE number of export sales Scotland has achieved has remained relatively static, despite the turbulent economic conditions.

New data from Scotland's chief statistician shows that manufactured export sales fell by 0.1 per cent in real terms in the second quarter of 2008.

Over the quarter, growth was seen in engineering and allied industries; wood, paper, publishing and printing; metals and metal products; and other manufacturing.

There were declines for food drink and tobacco; chemicals, coke, refined petroleum and nuclear fuel; and textiles, fur and leather.

Enterprise Minister Jim Mather said: "At a turbulent time for economies worldwide, Scottish manufactured exports are maintaining their solid performance."
