Location, location

As ONE who lived beside Castle Kennedy Gardens for 15 years, I can confirm that these gardens are beautiful, interesting and worth a visit (your report, 25 September). Visitors from outwith the area may, however, have trouble finding their way there. While the caption under the photograph says Castle Kennedy Gardens in Dumfries and Galloway, the text places them in Dumfriesshire.

The two locations are often wrongly used interchangeably. If you arrive in Dumfriesshire looking for Castle Kennedy, you will have a journey of at least 70 miles westwards across the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright and into Wigtownshire before reaching the gardens.

A look at the map will confirm that there’s a lot of land in south-west Scotland, but it’s not all Dumfriesshire.
