Woolies opens a new chapter
ONE-TIME high street stalwart Woolworths announced today it had seen like-for-like sales drop 4.6 per cent over the six weeks to January 13.
The firm, which said price deflation in CDs, DVDs and seasonal confectionery made trading tough over the period, also revealed that it has bought book wholesaler and distributor Bertrams.
Woolworths said it paid 29 million for the firm, and predicted that the move would increase its exposure to the growing books market.
