John Lewis sales rocket

John Lewis saw sales grow 17 per cent year-on-year in the last week of June, its latest trading figures revealed yesterday.

The increase – some of which was down to higher prices and the inclusion of figures from five additional stores – was up from gains of 9.9 per cent and 11.5 per cent in the preceding two weeks.

All three of its Scottish stores posted increases although they were below the overall average with Aberdeen up 10.8 per cent, Edinburgh 5.9 per cent and Glasgow 10.7 per cent.

Sales in its electricals and home technology department were up by more than 30 per cent thanks to a boost to television sales from the digital switchover and also by sales of the new iPad.

Sales at sister grocery chain Waitrose rose 3.2 per cent to £109.7 million over the week.
