John Lewis boosted by technology sales

Strong demand for tablet computers helped department store chain John Lewis deliver an 11 per cent rise in sales last week.

The employee-owned retailer reported total sales of £109.6 million for the week to 24 November, with sales of telecoms equipment, including tablets, more than double the level seen a year ago.

Buying and brand director Peter Ruis said electricals and home technology products had enjoyed an “eye-catching performance” overall, with sales 31.5 per cent higher than last year.

The group’s Edinburgh store saw sales rise 0.6 per cent year-on-year, with Glasgow up 0.4 per cent, but sales at its Aberdeen branch were down 2.6 per cent.

Freddie George, retail analyst at Seymour Pierce, said: “It is clear consumers, as with last year, have been saving for Christmas, waiting for the November pay day and the promotions, which have started to pick up momentum this week.”
