Property woes hit business banking
FEWER new business banking accounts were opened in Scotland last year than in 2008, as activity in property plunged by nearly half.
Fresh data from the Committee of Scottish Clearing Banks shows that the number of new accounts launched last year fell by 21 per cent to 15,726, compared with 20,028 in 2008. New accounts for companies operating in property, renting and associated areas dropped by 43 per cent to 4,641.
The only areas to record even modest increases included public administration and defence, and recreational, personal and communication services.
