Seafood drive aims to hook pupils
NICK NAIRN will be trying to pass on his love of Scottish seafood to a whole new generation when he brings his cooking skills into schools later this month.
The chef will be kicking off the Seafood in Schools programme with a demonstration in front of young people at Brechin High School on 12 and 13 September.
Seafood Scotland is running the events as part of a campaign to encourage young people to be more adventurous and to take pride in Scottish products.
Pupils from Brechin High will be joined by children from neighbouring primary schools for two days of events supported by the Scottish Government and by industry bodies.
Alexandria Hav, a former Grampian Chef of the Year, will also be demonstrating cooking techniques while Iain Spink, producer of Arbroath Smokies, will be sharing his enthusiasm for local fish.
Cabinet secretary for rural affairs and environment Richard Lochhead, MSP, said: “Seafood in Schools is an excellent programme that will give many young people throughout the country the opportunity to learn about healthy Scottish seafood, where it comes from and why it is good for them.
“At the Brechin High School event pupils will have opportunities to handle, prepare and taste Scottish seafood.
“I’m sure that the demonstrations from Nick Nairn will help inspire the youngsters to try new types of seafood and find out how delicious it can be.”
Steve Dempsey, the headmaster at Brechin High, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for pupils from the Brechin cluster schools to gain an insight into the benefits of eating seafood as part of a healthy and balanced diet, and I am grateful to Seafood in Schools for organising the event. ”
