Oracle given time on competition worries

ORACLE has been given more time by EU regulators to tackle concerns that its $7 billion (£4.3bn) acquisition of Sun Microsystems may be anti-competitive.

The European Commission, which regulates competition, said it had pushed its deadline from 19 to 27 January after representations from Oracle.

The commission said in a preliminary assessment that combining Sun's MySQL database product and Oracle's products could hurt competition over databases.

Oracle had said at the time that it "plans to vigorously oppose the commission's statement of objections".

Sun struck a deal to sell itself to Oracle after years of failed attempts to turn itself around.
