More students on the property books

THE student accommodation market has continued to show resilience in the economic downturn, according to Unite.

The student flats provider said it has benefited from 40,000 more students entering the university system in 2008-9 than did the previous year, despite only 9000 beds being added.

The company, which operates a number of sites in Edinburgh, said occupancy is currently at 99 per cent and rental growth for 2008-9 is at 8-11 per cent.

The firm is also looking for cost savings of 10 million in 2009.
