More construction firms 'will go bust'

FALLS in construction activity in the UK gained pace last month, figures revealed yesterday, prompting warnings that the industry is "struggling appreciably".

October's acceleration in the rate of the decline was the first since June, according to the latest purchasing managers' survey from research group Markit.

Michael Levack, head of the Scottish Building Federation, said he did not foresee a recovery in the sector north of the Border before 2012.

"It's looking pretty grim," he said. "The tightening of public-sector expenditure next year is going to have a drastic effect. Regrettably, there are more insolvencies to come."
