Minister in plea to support embattled pig industry

PIG farming is now ranked as one of the most depressing businesses any Scottish farmer could be involved in, with most independent analysts agreeing producers are losing at least £20 on every animal sent for slaughter.

Rising feed prices are the principal reason for the non-existent margins, but the failure of the major supermarket chains to respond to a likely shortage in supply is another factor frequently cited by producers.

Representations have been made in Edinburgh and Brussels and Richard Lochhead, the cabinet secretary for rural affairs, was out at the weekend at the Asda store in Govan making the case for a fair deal.

He said: "I am in regular contact with retailers about the need to take a long-term approach to sustainability in the supply chain.

"It is vital that high-quality fresh meat is sourced from local suppliers wherever possible to support our pig industry. I urge shoppers to look for the 'Specially Selected Pork' logo and consider using Scottish pork in everyday meals."

Mr Lochhead also yesterday announced a package worth 800 million over five years to stimulate Scottish rural businesses. The official line is that the Rural Development Contract and Rural Priorities initiatives could deliver much to farmers, foresters and others involved in the countryside.

Mr Lochhead said: "This is an important day, not just for rural communities, but for the country as a whole. This is a chance to make a real difference. Mitigation of climate change, improving water quality and the preservation of Scotland's unique biodiversity and landscapes are some of our key goals.

"With measures on economic and social goals as well as environmental issues, it is the first time a rural funding package has sought to deliver a greener Scotland and promote a fairer and wealthier rural country."

The programme budget is now open to tenders from interested parties who can provide a detailed business plan.
