Middle-aged hit by higher inflation rate
PEOPLE aged between 50 and 64 continue to face an inflation rate 50 per cent higher than the official level of 3 per cent, new figures show.
The age group has now faced the highest increase in prices for five consecutive months, with an effective inflation rate of 4.5 per cent, according to the Alliance Trust Research Centre.
It said the 50-64 age group typically spent more on transport, where inflation is currently running at 11 per cent, and fuel, where price inflation is at more than 22 per cent.
Other age groups have seen a fall in inflation, however, with lower food and utility prices reducing the rate of inflation facing over-75s from 3.7 to 3 per cent in the past month.
The differences in the rates of inflation faced by different age groups widened have widened further in the past month.
