Microsoft target Yahoo woos Murdoch

YAHOO, the internet search engine being stalked by software giant Microsoft, is believed to be in talks with News Corporation International in a bid to maintain independence.

News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch has reportedly held meetings about merging his online businesses, which include social networking site MySpace, with Yahoo.

Microsoft bid $44.6 billion (22.6bn) for Yahoo, and wants to cut Google's growing dominance of the internet.

Yahoo has also written to shareholders explaining why its rejected Microsoft's initial approach on Monday, pointing out it is the most visited website in the US, and counts almost half of the world's internet users among its membership.

Meanwhile, News Corp has said Rupert Murdoch's son James could earn up to $20 million as head of its European and Asian operations. Murdoch jnr will receive a $3.4m base salary and up to $16m in bonuses.
