Mather seeks air link to China

SCOTLAND could soon see the launch of direct air links with China on the back of a trade trip to the rapidly growing Asian powerhouse this week.

Enterprise minister Jim Mather will meet representatives of two Chinese airlines - Air China and Hainan Airlines - during a series of business engagements in Beijing and Shenzhen.

During the visit, from Tuesday to Saturday, Mather will set out the economic case for direct flights between the two nations. He will be joined by representatives of Scottish Development International to meet other investors across a range of sectors to showcase the investment opportunities Scotland has to offer.

The trip will coincide with the launch of a five-year trade and investment strategy designed to boost the Scottish economy by up to 2 billion by 2015.

Mather said: "International trade and investment is vital to Scotland's economy and is an integral part of the Scottish Government's growth plans."

The strategy will see public and private sector organisations work together to equip up to 10,000 more Scottish businesses with the skills to go international. It also aims to support up to 35,000 jobs by attracting foreign investment.
